When the benefits of helping seniors stay at home are so clear, maximizing the home care services you can get with the resources you have makes perfect sense. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seniors who age-in-place hold onto their autonomy and independence longer because they\u2019re in a familiar environment and maintain ties to their community. With the appropriate support, seniors can downsize at their own pace rather than being forced to move due to a crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But navigating Ontario\u2019s home care system isn\u2019t as simple as picking up the phone and asking for help. That\u2019s why Gaye Moffett, owner and operator of GEM Health Care Services<\/strong><\/a>, often hears from people who are just trying to figure out where to start.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis morning someone called and said her father is on a limited income, but needs help doing his housekeeping and laundry,\u201d said Moffett. \u201cI pointed her to the City of Ottawa\u2019s Home Support Services<\/a> <\/strong>so they can determine if he was eligible for the services they offer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Navigating a complex system to get the right mix of services<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Moffett has been working in the home care sector long enough to know the ins and outs of navigating a complex system that\u2019s always changing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether you start in the public system or with family-funded home care services, you\u2019ll probably need a bit of help to make sure you\u2019ve got the right mix of services at the right time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moffett\u2019s experience running GEM Health Care Services \u2014 which currently has a contract with the Ontario government to provide publicly funded, privately delivered services \u2014 is why she\u2019s a master at this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI often get people started with family-funded nursing care,\u201d said Moffett. \u201cBut if they become eligible for public services, we can adjust their hours to make sure they have the right mix.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moffett leverages her nursing background to help her clients maximize their resources. \u201cI once helped a client\u2019s mother get her nursing care covered by writing their insurer a letter,\u201d she said. \u201cHer coverage said the services had to be medically necessary \u2014 as a nurse I was able to explain that a PSW can\u2019t manage tube feeding and other care needs that she had.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So where should you start if you or your loved one needs home care to \u201cage-in-place\u201d? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asking yourself these questions will help point you in the right direction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

  1. Are you eligible for publicly funded home-care services?<\/strong> Call Home and community services <\/strong><\/a>with the Ontario government to find out.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Do your benefits cover homemaking, nursing or both?<\/strong> You need to ask your insurer how they define \u201cmedically necessary.\u201d <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. How many family\u2013funded hours do you really to supplement your public services?<\/strong> Talk to a veteran health professional like Moffett to find the right balance, and explain the difference between what\u2019s medically necessary and what isn\u2019t.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
