GEM Outreach and Advocacy

GEM outreach and advocacy

With over thirty years of service, GEM has accumulated substantial experience within the home health care industry and in the broader local business communities where we operate. We are pleased to regularly share our knowledge to help other companies succeed and to support advocacy efforts that will benefit clients and businesses alike.

Active industry association members
Participating in home care associations allows GEM team members to contribute
significantly by offering a very detailed operational perspective. We provide concrete, real-world examples to help others understand issues and opportunities in the home health care industry.

GEM is a member and has served on the boards of:

Canadian Home Care Association
With CHCA, we are currently participating in Project ECHO, an important initiative which aims to close the knowledge gap in home care, primary care, and community-based services by providing easy access to expertise, experience and evidence-based practices.

Home Care Ontario
Our founder, president and CEO, Gaye Moffett, served on the Family Funded
Care Committee and is its representative on HCO’s board. This work is essential
towards ensuring that the voices of family-funded care providers and their clients are heard in addition to those representing government-funded care.

A family-first business
GEM’s motto, “our family for yours”, sums up how we feel about being a family-owned and operated business, one that comes with unique challenges and rewards.

We are longstanding members and have recently joined the board of Family Enterprise Canada, a dynamic network that knows what it takes to run a successful business and keep family relationships strong and healthy. The organization promotes the simple truth that the future health and growth of the Canadian economy depends in part on the strength and success of a vibrant family enterprise community.

We are grateful to be able to participate by sharing our knowledge with other members and to provide support for its activities such as lobbying various levels of government to impact key legislative issues affecting family businesses, succession planning and more.

GEM in the community
GEM is a steadfast supporter of its team members’ volunteerism and the company actively seeks out opportunities to leverage its capabilities to be of broad benefit to others. Examples include our corporate membership in the Rotary Club of West Ottawa as well as our annual workplace vaccination clinics, where we deploy teams of nursing staff to visit worksites, making it easy for organizations to keep their teams healthy with minimal disruption.

GEM also provides mentorship to students in the Ottawa Carleton District School Board’s Continuing Education program, Employment Preparation for Health Care Aide. In addition, GEM liaises regularly with employment resource centres and visits job fairs to ensure those seeking employment in the home health care field have easy access to available opportunities.

Supporting our staff
We offer ongoing skills training as we believe that continuous staff development leads to increased job satisfaction and better retention. Examples include non-violent crisis intervention as well as multiple training modules produced by the Ontario Residential Care Association.
